CircusWest is organizing CircusFest, a multi-day circus festival, the first of its kind in Vancouver.

With a mission to engage, inspire and celebrate the Circus Community, CircusFest is poised to bring the best circus talent to the West Coast. The festival features leading circus acts and performers, Main Stage shows, hands-on workshops, installations, cabarets, industry panel discussions, during 4 days of circus exploration and inspiration.

To make this community-building festival a reality, we need your support. Please consider helping us by donating to our Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign. Every bit helps, and we are offering amazing perks to donors including circus lessons, meeting performers, and even exclusive, private showcases! If you are not in position to support CircusFest financially, please help by sharing this with your friends, and spreading the word.

Celebrate BC Family Day with CircusWest! On Monday February 10, CircusWest will perform Wonderland Circus as part of the festivities at the Richmond Children’s Arts Festival. Join us for a delightful day of activities and fun during British Columbia’s newest holiday!

CircusWest’s performance of Wonderland Circus during Family Day is a featured event for our 30th Anniversary. Similar to last year’s May Show*, Wonderland Circus chronicles Alice’s journey as the Mad Hatter draws her through the looking glass and into a wacky circus Wonderland where up is down and back is front. This show is not to be missed!

Mad Skillz @ CircusWest

Posted on 07/18/2012 at 9:04am

By Marchel Eang

For anyone in the circus community who hasn’t heard of Mad Skillz (nothing to be ashamed of either), simply put, it’s one of the best annual ground-circus festivals in Vancouver! The festival is three days long and is hosted at CircusWest. Mad Skillz celebrates mostly object manipulation: juggling, staff, poi, diabolo, and contact – but there’s also the occasional person that pulls out something different, like a unicycle. This year, the rou-cyr made an appearance as well and many people had the fun of trying it for the first time.

During the day from about 11am to 6pm there is an open gym juggling jam at CircusWest. It’s the perfect time to practice those stills that are giving you trouble and meet new people. These new friends often understand your juggling problems and can help you! Throughout the open gym time are workshops led by various artists in the community. You can learn anything from clowning, to juggling, to hoop, to how to better yourself as a business person if you’re interested in the business aspect of being a performer. All the workshops are an hour to two in length and open to all skill sets.

Following open gym on Friday and Saturday nights, there are a series of performances and parties.

Friday was night at Sideshow Studios (a shared studio space owned by a collective of Vancouver circus artists) featured the Emerging Artists of Vancouver’s circus community and was followed by the Renegade Juggling show. The Emerging Artists showcase was open to all ages and featured many performers from CircusWest; you may have even seen them in the May production of Blue Sky Circus!

After that showcase is a more adult-oriented juggler’s sketch-comedy cabaret called the Renegade Showcase that was for audiences 18+.

Saturday night was the Mad Skillz Gala which featured jugglers and artists from all over North America. Due to the venue, this year’s gala was unfortunately 19+ but there was a live stream of the show hosted at CircusWest for those who still wanted to watch, which was a party on its own!

All in all, I would highly recommend this festival to anyone interested in circus. Everyone’s extremely friendly and the open gym jams are the perfect time to learn new skills or try a new prop. Youth are encouraged to come by as well; we had a couple of boys, aged 9 – 12 from Portland who could juggle 5 clubs… WOW!

Don’t miss it next year!

CircusWest loves Teddy Bears too!

Posted on 06/14/2012 at 12:12pm

Great performances at the Teddy Bear Picnic. Thanks Amy Salvador for the photos!

CircusWest was in Coquitlam at the Teddy Bear Picnic this past weekend and brought delight to many children and bears! Performing two shows as well as an interactive juggling session for festival go-ers.

Ashara, Kaitlynn, Kaja, Travis, Quinn and Anthony put on a great show for an audience packed with youngsters, teddy bears in hand. To get in the spirit, Quinn and Travis dressed like teddy bears, which the kids loved.

Keep your eyes peeled for CircusWest at various events around the Lower Mainland this summer. For the most up to date information, check out our Facebook page, Twitter and sign up for our monthly newsletter.

Stay tuned for photos taken by one of our talented CirKids!

For kids of all ages! CircusWest does VICF

CirKids performers show onlookers what CircusWest is all about.

From May 29-June 3, Granville Island was full of energy thanks to the 2012 Vancouver International Children’s Festival. Not only did this festival host many great plays, shows and more, it also hosted, yours truly, CircusWest.

A group of CirKids dazzled for three days this past weekend at the World Youth Stage. The performers, when not performing, taught thousands of children and their parents the basics of scarf and ball juggling, diabolo, flower sticks and ring juggling. Needless to say, our circus tent was quite the popular one! Kids were even coming back for more! There were a few repeat customers that couldn’t get enough of circus skills or our friendly and helpful CirKids.

A special thanks to our team of Tami, Ian, Quinn, Anthony, James, Nick, Travis, Ashara and members of Ensemble troupe for their efforts and sharing of their knowledge. This team brought much joy to festival go-ers, apparent through their beaming smiles and gazes of awe.

Hopefully we’ll see some of the keen festival kids in our gym soon (maybe their parents too!) – we love new faces. We can’t wait until next year.
